Officials from the US Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office announced on 27 October 2010 that the remains of two Airmen missing in action from World War II, Army Air Forces SSgts. Claude A. Ray of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Claude G. Tyler of Landover, Maryland, had been identified. The two Airmen were part of a twelve-man crew in a B-24D Liberator that had taken off from an airfield near Port Moresby, New Guinea, on 27 October 1943, and had never returned. After receiving location information, a team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command was able to recover the remains in 2007. The Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory used mitochondrial DNA to positively identify Ray and Tyler.
