After thirty-five years of Hercules operation, LXX Squadron, one of two Royal Air Force units operating the Hercules C. Mk.1 (C-130K) transport stood down in ceremonies at RAF Lyneham near Wiltshire, England, on 8 September 2010. A full formal parade was held to mark the occasion, which concluded with a flyby of a C-130K, C-17, and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Lancaster bomber. Formed at South Farnborough on 22 April 1916, the LXX Squadron history includes service in every war, conflict, or disaster since, providing essential aid and assistance where and when needed. In 1928, LXX Squadron crews carried out the first airlift of British Nationals, taking civilians from Kabul, Afghanistan, in 1928.
